What are dental implants?
They are man-made replacements for tooth roots made of titanium. They serve as the anchor for replacement teeth.
Will it hurt much?
Local anesthesia is used for many cases, and many patients tell us that it is easier than having a tooth removed.
How long will it take?
For many cases today, the implants can be placed and loaded even on the same day. For other cases, the implants are placed and have to heal for several months before the implants can be loaded.
Will I have to be without my teeth?
If the implants are not loaded immediately with a temporary, then whatever you are using prior to the replacement will be modified to be worn while the implants are healing.
Will I have to see the dentist after I have implants?
Yes, you will need to still see you dentist for your regular hygiene visits.
How long will they last?
They will last as long or longer than conventional dental work, as long as you take care of them properly with daily cleaning, just like your natural teeth, (floss, brush, etc).
I’m too old for implants.
Patients over 90 years of age have replaced loose partial and full dentures with implant-supported restorations and their main comment is: “I wish I had done this sooner.” They are enjoying the benefits of easier chewing, speaking and better quality of life.
I’ve lived with my denture for years. I can get by.
Well, you know we all put up with a lot of things we don’t think will change or get better. Implants have opened up a whole new world to some of our patients.
How much better will I be able to eat?
Our patients tell us of tremendous improvements in their ability to chew foods and eat what they couldn’t before.
What happens if I wait?
Tooth loss leads to bone loss. For those with dentures, you may have to continue to get your partial adjusted, or perhaps have a new one made. You may have to have your denture relined. In addition, there will be costs for denture adhesives and cleaners. Your denture will continue to cause you soreness and pain and unfortunately will get worse. For people with missing teeth, the teeth can move and become crooked, and bone loss will continue to affect the adjacent teeth. An implant will keep the teeth from moving, and preserve the bone for better esthetics.
